Charity Challenge Summer Trekking

In this charity challenge, participants will cover a distance of 55km/34miles over  4 walking days. This will be an affirming journey through otherworldly landscapes. The right amount of adventure, amazement and challenge, all for a good cause!

Our logistics team will take care of the luggage and cook hearty meals at the end of the demanding and yet dreamlike days.

DAY 1 – International travel and Transfer to the Interior

Today, the groups will be met at the airport by our local agent. Then a private transfer will be waiting outside to take people at the trail head 150 miles/240km away.

After a quick refreshment stoop, the group will venture inland towards the Fjallabak Nature reserve beyond the moonlike lava fields of the Hekla volcano.

Once at the trailhead in Landmannalaugar, the group will camp or settle in the hut while the logistics team take care of setting up a hearty supper.

Before turning in, why not go enjoy the famed hot river spouting naturally from underneath the lava.

Day 2: Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn (14mi/24km)

What a day! Crossing the jet-black lava the hikers discover the otherworldly colours of the rhyolite mountains. Soon, the fumaroles and steam vents appear and attract. The very explanation for these rainbow colours surroundings.

The first climb leads you to a lonely plateau with wide open views and the mighty vents of Storihver. Another climb sees you to the Hrafntinnusker obsidian lava fields contrasting with the wide snow fields always present that high up at nearly 1000m (3000 feet).

We pass the cosy high hut of Hrafntinnusker towering over this afternoon´s program, the long downhill to the Álftavatn ´s lake. A breathtaking view which makes the effort beyond worthwhile!

After the descent the hut, the campsite, the peaceful surroundings and warming meal will be sure to revigorated weary hikers.

Day 3: Álftavatn to Emstrur (14km/9mi)

Once again, the scenery changes! The Mýrdalsjökull icecap is shaping the landscape. Its rivers cutting through the black sand and precipitating itself into deep gorges and canyons. Hope you are ready to get your feet wet as you will wade through glacial streams, invigorating! The towering green moss-covered volcano look down upon you with amusement. The black sand gives you a desert impression, but the glacier and volcanic cones remind you that you are far up North.

The canyon of the Markarfljót river is a must do detour. Close to our camp, it is a chasm 300 meters deep, the Icelandic Grand Canyon! No further than the edge is the rule.

We reach our campsite or hut in Emstrur. The cooks have enjoyed the views of the glacier outlet and rolling hills while preparing your meal, it is your turn to get a “chew with a view”.

Day 4: Emstrur to Thorsmörk and Transportation to Reykjavik (15km/10mi)

Early departure as we have a bus to catch! But the commute to the bus stop is one for the books.

After crossing yet another glacial river (this time on a bridge), you will journey down through dramatic landscapes until spotting vegetation and then …trees! Over the past days you have seen none. The luxurious vegetation of Þórsmörk is a welcoming sight. Sadly, it is bittersweet, as we get to one of the pearls of Iceland it means that the challenge draws to a close. But what a finale! The glaciers shaped a landscape you can barely imagine, and the luxurious vegetations dresses it dreamily.

As you step into the bus heading to Reykjavik, the adventure is not yet over. The vehicle will have to ford raging rivers, and the landscape unfolding behind the windows will be keeping your eyes open for certain.

Arrival in Reykjavik in the early evening.

Accommodation in guesthouses in the city centre.

Day 5 : Reykjavík and flight home

Should your flight home allow, you could choose to undertake a morning exploration of Reykjavik or visit a geothermal Spa such as the Blue Lagoon or the Secret Lagoon.

You then get your airport transfer to return to Keflavik airport for your flight back home.

How does this programme look? Challenging enough as it is? Or does it need changes for you?
