8 Days Icelandic Winter- Hot n´ Cold!

Over 8 days and 7 nights, your self-driven journey will take you through the enchanting landscapes of the Golden Circle, the awe-inspiring glaciers of the southeast, and the rugged beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Ideally situated for Northern Lights spotting, cozy hotels or guesthouses await you each night.

The adventure begins! After landing you can pick up your faithful winter-ready steed at the car rental desk along with your detailed itinerary in paper copy.

In Reykjavik, the northernmost capital of the world, you can spend the rest of the day exploring the charming city, visiting iconic landmarks such as Hallgrímskirkja church and the Harpa Concert Hall. Indulge in local cuisine at one of the city’s top restaurants and unwind in a comfortable hotel for the night.

Day 1:  Airport- Reykjavik

Day 2: The Golden Circle

 

 

Starting with the UNESCO World Heritage site of Thingvellir National Park. Marvel at the historical and geological significance of this stunning location, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.  You continue your journey along the Golden Circle to witness the erupting geysers at Geysir and the majestic Gullfoss waterfall.

You will then head towards the South coast for a rest in the charming countryside, and who knows? Maybe the Northern Lights will grace the skies with their presence.

Day 3: The South Coast- Waterfalls and black sand shore

We head to the south. Soon we change scenery driving along sheer mountains where waterfalls cascade down. Maybe frozen currently, maybe not. Here the weather is unpredictable which is part of the magic.

You may stop at Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Kvernufoss. Waterfalls are everywhere and each and its surroundings are unique and mind blowing.

The black sand beach and sea cliffs are worth having a look out for. The eeriness and uniqueness of the geological formations of Dyrholaey, Reynisfjara and Vikurfjara will leave you feeling like you changed planet.

Day 4: Vatnajökull National Park- Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

 

 

Prepare for a day of adventure as you make your way to Vatnajökull National Park, home to Europe’s largest glacier. Explore the otherworldly landscapes, maybe joining an inspiring glacier hike on one of the glacier outlets.

Head up to the breathtaking sights of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs float serenely against the backdrop of Vatnajökull Glacier. You can stroll among the icebergs of the Diamond Beach and simply soak in the tranquillity of this mesmerizing location After the day’s explorations, rest in a beautiful hotel cozy guesthouse near the park.

You will be driving west today. Take your time… The views will change. Even though you drove these roads before, the winter lights change the landscape. You will discover a new land and be able to take the stops you did not manage eastwards bound.

At the close of the day, stop and relax in the stunning Hvammsvik baths with its beautiful mountain views.

You will stay in west Iceland tonight.

Day 5 : Driving West

Day 6: Snæfellsjökull National Park

Explore the mystical Snæfellsnes peninsula, a place steeped in folklore and natural beauty. You can stroll along bird cliffs of Arnastapi, meet the seal colonies, stroll among the lava fields, some say that Snæfellsnes has it all and they might be on to something….

As night falls, find a comfortable retreat in one of the peninsula’s welcoming hotels and maybe watch the Northern Lights.

At the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, a stunning landmark that has graced the screens of many films and TV shows, you start the day. Then, make your way to the enchanting town of Stykkishólmur, known for its colourful houses and rich maritime history. Reflect on your incredible journey over a delicious meal at a local restaurant.

Thereafter, you will cross one of the high mountain pass to drive back down to Reykjavik for one last night

Day 7 : Kirkjufell and Stykkishólmur

Day 8 : Return home

As your adventure draws to a close, take one last stroll in  Reykjavik, savouring the memories of your Icelandic winter escapade, the land of fire and ice.
